Join us EVERY SUNDAY for a rotating selection of the best in LA's Jazz Music scene, and stay late for our Sunday residency with The Sam Hirsh Trio.

Musicians who want to jam get in free with an instrument after 9pm (one drink minimum).

Jonah Shin
Jonah Shin is currently a junior at California State University Northridge (CSUN) majoring in jazz studies and minoring in business marketing. He has received the Herb Alpert Scholarship for musical performance while maintaining a place on the dean's list for five consecutive semesters. Jonah currently studies with L.A. based drummer Jason Harnell, but has also studied under other prominent drummers such as Mason Guidry, Gene Coye, and Peter Erskine. During his time at CSUN, he has had the privilege of performing alongside notable artists such as Orrin Evans, Jon Hatamiya, Gordon Goodwin, John Daversa, Nicole McCabe, Adam Hirsch and many others. He has also had the fortune to perform for the Los Angeles Jazz Society (LAJS) for several events, the most notable being with the CSUN Jazz A band at the Bill Holman memorial concert. In 2022, Jonah won the LAJS Young Musicians Showcase award and was able to record and perform original music live in front of Ira Nepus and other LAJS members. Jonah currently leads and composes for his own group, the Jonah Shin Jazz Collective. He has performed at The Mint on several occasions (with his own group and various peers) sharing the stage with the Sam Hirsch trio and other notable musicians.

Ryan Embola
Ryan Embola is an LA-based Bassist and composer who currently resides in Santa Clarita, California. He is currently in the process of creating and arranging new music for his upcoming project under the working title of "Project Orchard" primarily featuring his sextet and Big Band. While going to California State University, Northridge, he has had the opportunity to receive mentorship and guidance from luminaries of the music both inside and outside of campus walls spanning from Eric Revis, Gary Pratt, and Tina Raymond to Bennie Maupin, Harold Land Jr, and Regina Carter. On top of his Jazz, Gospel and R&B based background, he takes great interest in electronic music and multimedia projects such as the works of Daft Punk and Snails House. He considers his main passion as a composer and as a musician to be displaying and building on the Love of our Ancestors, The Divine, the Communities in which everyone has the capability to inhabit or understand at a human level as well as the Love of Identity and Great Black Music.

Lana Drincic
Lana Drincic is an LA-based pianist, composer, and educator originally from Kingsburg, California. She began playing piano and composing at age five and cultivated a love for music throughout her youth. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at California State University, Northridge, where she has studied with pianists Matt Harris and Gary Fukushima, and is currently studying with saxophonist Shai Golan. In April of 2023, she was the featured pianist performing with the CSUN Symphony Orchestra and guest artist Serj Tankian for his project Invocations, an orchestral work that was released in November of 2023 as a live album under Tankian’s name. Lana was a semifinalist in the jazz division of the 2022 Rubato International Piano Competition. In the fall of 2022, she was selected as a finalist for the Los Angeles Jazz Society Young Musicians Showcase. She was also selected as a 2023 Jazz Education Network Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Combo member. She has been mentored by New York-based pianist Caili O’Doherty as part of the Women in Jazz Organization Mentors Program in the 2023 season. Lana works as a sideperson for jazz, pop, and indie artists in the Central Valley and Los Angeles. She is also part of a jazz collective consisting of fellow CSUN students called Birds, and she leads a quintet for which she writes and arranges her original music. She performs with her quintet at venues around Los Angeles and is currently working on releasing a record with this group.

James Day
James Day is a saxophonist, composer, and arranger from Long Beach, California. Because of his proximity to the jazz scene in Los Angeles, James was given the opportunity to study with many professional artists early on in his career, including Rusty Higgins, Bob Sheppard, and Dan Higgins. His sophomore year of high school marked a turning point when he was accepted into the jazz program at the Colburn School in downtown LA. Since then, James has been recognized as a three-time National YoungArts Foundation merit winner, a three-time Downbeat Student Music Award winner, a two-time GRAMMY Camp Jazz Session finalist, and was named the 2018 Orange County Register Artist of the Year. Currently, James is wrapping up his senior year at California State University, Northridge, where he is earning his bachelor’s degree in jazz studies. His new residence in the San Fernando Valley has allowed him to study with saxophonist Shai Golan and play with notable jazz ensembles, including the Bill Holman Big Band and the Tom Kubis Big Band. In his free time, James enjoys spending time at home with friends and family as well as exploring everything that the City of Angels has to offer.

Sam Hirsh (Piano): 

Pianist, composer and educator Sam Hirsh has been an active member of the Los Angeles jazz scene for a decade and is gaining recognition for his soulful, energetic sound. “Hirsh finds new poetry in the rich vocabulary of the hard bop to post-bop continuum” (Andrew Gilbert). Sam aims to carry on the tradition of this art form and simultaneously create his own voice in the music. He’s performed with various acts along the West Coast, Taiwan, Bolivia and New York City. 

He can be seen playing with the Bill Holman Big Band, Melissa Morgan, Henry Franklin, Carl Saunders, Gilbert Castellanos and Roy McCurdy, among others.

Hirsh’s debut album Quite Frankly, featuring saxophone icon Ralph Moore, New York heavyweight John Webber on bass, and Los Angeles drummer Kevin Kanner, was released on all platforms in February 2020 and made JazzWeek Radio Chart’s top 20.

Luca Alemanno (Bass):

Originally from Lecce, Italy, Luca Alemanno is considered by critics and musicians “among the finest young and modern jazz musicians that currently Italy has to offer”.He was awarded 1st Prize at the 2009 European Bass day. At the age of 19, he received 2 scholarships to attend Berklee School of Music (Boston).He achieved a diploma in Classical Double Bass at “T.Schipa Conservatory of Music” (Lecce) and a second one in Jazz Electric Bass at “G.Martucci Conservatory of Music” (Salerno).
In 2016 Luca won the audition at the world renewed “Thelonoius Monk Institute of Jazz Performance” class of 2018 in Los Angeles. The panel was composed of Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath and Kenny Burrell among the others. Luca is the first Italian musician who achieved this goal.
Touring, recording and performing in all over the world he is currently part of several projects, including Fabrizio Bosso Quartet, Anne Ducros Quartet, Stanley Jordan Trio, Nicola Conte Jazz Combo.
A musician with diverse interests and a wide range of abilities, Luca has performed with international jazz artists such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joe Lovano, Geroge Garzone, Stanley Jordan, Kenwood Dennard, Maria Schneider, Jerry Bergonzi, Mark Giuliana, Jason Lindner, Enrico Pieranunzi and Fabrizio Bosso among the others.


Kevin Kanner (Drums):
Kevin Kanner, a native of Southern California, has already amassed a large number of jazz credits including recordings with Paul Anka, Bill Holman (including 2006 and 2007 Grammy® nominated recordings), Gilbert Castellanos, Melissa Morgan, Annie Sellick, Gail Wynters, The Bud Shank Big Band, Josh Nelson and Michael Buble. 

Kevin has also toured and performed with many artists and including John Pizzarelli, Maureen McGovern, The Gilbert Castellanos Quintet, The Bill Holman Band, The Gerald Clayton Trio, The Clayton Brothers, The Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Lee Konitz, Bob Brookmeyer, Larry Goldings, Charles McPhearson, Benny Green and many more.

In addition to the vast amount of sideman work, Kevin has also led perhaps the most well remembered jazz jam session in recent Los Angeles history at the historic venue, the Mint. This session, called Groove Pocket, featured prominent underground hip hop DJ stars as well as a weekly band that over the course of six years consisted of, Ambrose Akinmuserie, Tim Green, Gerald Clayton, Harish Ragahavan, Joe Sanders, Larry Fuller, James Westfall, Charles Altura, Hamilton Price and Josh Nelson.
